New York Mets Switch Prospect to Different Number After Backlash

The New York Mets assigned outfield prospect Nick Morabito uniform number 8 for a game against the Washington Nationals before changing the assignment following fan reaction. Morabito appeared in the contest wearing the number but will now wear number 55 instead. The switch came after public criticism over the choice of a number long associated with former catcher Gary Carter.

Number 8 has not been issued to a Mets player since 2001. Carter wore the number during his five seasons with the club from 1985 to 1989 and contributed to the 1986 World Series championship team. Three players wore the number after Carter left the Mets, with Desi Relaford the last to do so.

The Mets have retired six numbers since owner Steve Cohen acquired the team in 2020. Carter, who died in 2012, has not received that honor, though his number has remained largely unused in recent decades. Morabito made a notable over-the-wall catch in foul territory during the game against the Nationals.

The Mets will continue their current series with the Washington Nationals. No further details on additional uniform adjustments have been announced.
